Our nation’s fight to bring down health care spending is about to get tougher. Recent data released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) projects that, overall, national health expenditures will grow by 5.4% per year on average, accounting for nearly 20% of national gross domestic product (GDP) by 2031, or $7.2 trillion. Between 2022 and 2031, Medicare spending will grow at an average rate of 7.5% a year – faster than either private health insurance or Medicaid. In 2023 alone, Medicare is projected to spend more than $1 trillion.
The numbers don’t come as a surprise, as the last of the baby boomers begin to enroll in Medicare. But they do serve as a reminder. This data strongly reinforces the need to meet CMS’s goal to have all Medicare beneficiaries and most Medicaid beneficiaries in an accountable care relationship by 2030.
With an aging population on the rise, the urgency of value-based care is becoming increasingly clear for our nation, and this new model of care also presents an opportunity for practices, health centers and clinics alike to deliver better care and make a big impact on total health care spend.
The evidence is clear: proactive, preventive primary care improves health outcomes and lower costs, and here at Aledade over the past nine years, working with more than 1,500 practices including 188 community health centers, we have saved the health care system more than $1.7 billion dollars doing just that.
But just how did this nationwide network of primary care professionals accomplish that? By gaining access to cutting-edge data analytics, user-friendly guided workflows, unparalleled health care policy expertise, strong payer relationships and local, hands-on support from attentive value-based care experts.
